Wilhelm Resch grew up on his parents Franz and Theresia’s farm outside the small German town of Niederwinden. In 1906, he immigrated to the United States in search of a better life. Arriving in New York, he found employment at a watch factory working alongside his father’s brother Frank. Hearing of the vibrant Columbus, Ohio German community, the two packed their bags and headed to the Buckeye Capital.
In Columbus, they found work at Berkey’s Bakery where they mastered the trade. Wilhelm proved exceptionally proficient. One day, Mr. Berkey overheard the relatives discussing their dream of opening their own bakery and, in anger, fired the two on the spot. Seizing destiny, the men pooled together their savings and constructed the very first Resch’s Bakery on East Livingston Avenue.
